Imagine: you and your colleagues, normally armed with mouse and keyboard, are suddenly face to face with ... a climbing wall in the Ardennes. A day at the office usually means coffee, emails and meetings. A day in the Ardennes, on the other hand, means mud, adrenaline, bouts of laughter and someone yelling, "Help, I'm stuck in the tree!" During a company outing in the Ardennes, the office tiger suddenly turns into a wilderness hero. Or at least into someone who does everything possible not to end up last at the top of the climbing wall. The adventure often begins on the bus. Less than half an hour into the trip, the first "Are we there yet?" sounds. The HR manager enthusiastically hands out muffins, while the intern appears to have put together his survival outfit with sneakers. Upon arrival, you immediately see the differences: some colleagues are bouncing with energy and can't wait to brave nature, while others mainly ask if there is wifi in the forest.
Kayaking sounds idyllic in theory: quiet paddling through rippling water under a clear blue sky. In reality, it often means that the fellow in the front thinks he is an Olympic rower, while the one in the back mostly looks around and forgets to steer. Before you know it, you get stuck in a bunch of branches, accidentally hug the bank or scare the hell out of a group of ducks. Team building has never been so wet ánd so funny. Then there is abseiling and climbing. Where at the office you would meet at most at the coffee machine, now you dangle together on a rope twenty meters above the ground. Trust suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. "Drop down, I'll hold the rope!" sounds reassuring, until you realize that this is being shouted by the same colleague who lost his password three times last week. Yet just that kind of tension turns out to be the ingredients for an unforgettable story.
Mountain biking in the Ardennes then produces the most diverse scenes. The fanatics take off as if they are participating in the Tour de France, while the more relaxed types are mainly concerned with staying upright. And if someone does go down, the mud makes everything look less painful - and all the funnier on the group photos. After an action-packed day of adventure, the evening program follows at the campfire. As the marshmallows over the fire turn into sticky coals, tall tales fly across the table. The director who claims to have "almost" seen a wild boar, the secretary who accidentally sent the group in the wrong direction, or that one colleague who discovered that singing in wet shoes sounds surprisingly good.
And that is perhaps the greatest strength of a company outing in the Ardennes: it is not just about the activities, but mainly about the moments together. The laughter at failed attempts, the cheering when someone does climb that rock and the realization that your colleagues outside the office might be even more fun. You go home with sore muscles in places you didn't know you had them, a photo folder full of great memories and a team stronger than ever.
