A good neighbor is better than a distant friend. A well-known proverb that contains a large grain of truth. After all, good neighbors can help each other when necessary, for example by watching each other's children when you have to leave unexpectedly, or for that one cup of sugar you need just now but no longer have in the house. Or to have a drink together in the garden on a warm summer evening and enjoy the setting sun. If you live in a nice neighborhood and have good contact with your neighbors, it will enhance your living experience. The neighborhood party has gained in popularity in recent years, as evidenced by the increasing number of national and regional initiatives and the fact that a real Neighborhood Day is organized every year in September!
There is little so typically Dutch as a good old-fashioned neighborhood party. The barbecue on, plastic chairs in a circle, the smell of satay in the air and someone shouting too early, "We'll do another round of bingo later, hooray!" Whether you live in Amsterdam overlooking the canals or in Emmen where the cows are the first guests - everywhere in the Netherlands we know how to make a party of it. In Rotterdam, of course, the neighborhood party goes nice and tough: on an industrial site with pallets as tables and music just a little too loud, but hey - the atmosphere is great. In Utrecht they do it city-chic, with lanterns, home-baked quiches and at least one neighbor who tells that her salad is "with lentils, because that is so filling." In Eindhoven, it's all about conviviality and gadgets ("Look, I've arranged a smoke machine!"), while in Groningen they prove that even with wind force seven and a crooked party tent, the party just keeps going.
And then you have the Randstad neighborhood parties, where the catering comes via a hip food truck and someone inevitably says, "Shall we make this more sustainable next year?" While in Brabant and Limburg, the neighbors simply join in with their own crate of beer, the volume of the music simmers down as soon as the talk volume goes up, and the conga line spontaneously emerges. A neighborhood party is the perfect mix of food, drink, dancing, conviviality and light chaos. One person bakes pancakes for the whole street, another comes up with a mysterious salad that no one dares touch, and there is always someone who thinks he is the DJ ("Yeah, but you really MUST feel this record, man").
Whether in a city park, on a square, in a courtyard or simply in the middle of the street - a neighborhood party connects, surprises and makes for legendary stories ("remember when the party tent ended up in the pond?"). In short: from Groningen to Maastricht and from The Hague to Zwolle - wherever you live, there's always a reason to light the barbecue, decorate the street and laugh, eat and party together with your neighbors as if you've known each other for years (even if you only saw some of them for the first time yesterday). So hup: hang up the flags, set up the music system and pour the first drink. The weather does what it wants, but the neighborhood party goes on - with or without ponchos.
