Everyone knows music. Or at least, that’s what everyone thinks. Until the first three seconds of a global hit start playing and suddenly five coworkers shout at once, “Wait, wait, I know it!” Only to then give five different answers. Welcome to the Top 2000 Quiz. The teams pick a name, take their seats, and from that moment on, there’s no more holding back. Team ABBA, The Bee Gees, Backstreet Boys, Vengaboys, or Destiny’s Child: whatever name you choose, within a few minutes it becomes clear that some coworkers take the concept of a “fun music quiz” remarkably seriously.
Throughout the various rounds, the biggest hits of all time fly by. Recognize intros, guess artists and titles, fill in missing lyrics, and test your knowledge with questions about the Top 2000. Sometimes just two notes are enough. Sometimes everyone can sing along perfectly, but absolutely no one has a clue what the song is called. It’s precisely because music connects generations that the best teams form. One coworker knows absolutely everything about Queen, Fleetwood Mac, and The Beatles, while someone else effortlessly recognizes every hit from the ’90s and 2000s. And then there’s that one participant who claims beforehand to hardly ever listen to music, but then turns out to be able to sing along word for word to a song from 1987. Between questions, there’s consultation, discussion, and above all, lots of laughter. Was that Bon Jovi? Bryan Adams? Or something completely different? One thing is certain: the less sure someone is of their answer, the more vigorously they usually defend it.
And of course, it’s not always just about guessing. Some songs simply beg to be sung along to. First tentatively from your seat, then a little louder, and before you know it, half the room is joining in. And the evening doesn’t have to end after the final round. For example, combine the Top 2000 Quiz with lunch, dinner, or drinks, or wrap things up with a festive Top 2000 Afterparty. Then all the songs that got an enthusiastic response during the quiz can finally be played in full.
