A workshop in the Netherlands actually starts the same everywhere. People come in with the idea that they are "just going to do something fun" and act as if it will be a normal, organized activity. About an hour later, someone is shaking cocktails as if he has been running his own beach club for years, while the rest is laughing his head off. In short: exactly how a good workshop should go.
And honestly? The Netherlands is surprisingly good at workshops. From historic city centers to modern hotspots and from burgundy squares to creative industrial locations: everywhere there are places where conviviality almost automatically gets out of hand.
Creative workshops continue to be wildly popular. Painting, cooking, making cocktails, spraying graffiti or workshops where nobody knows in advance exactly what the intention is, it does not really matter what you do. In the end, it is always about laughing together, eating, drinking and witnessing how one person in the group suddenly becomes completely convinced of hidden artistic talent.
Cocktail workshops have become practically cultural heritage during group outings. Not only because cocktails are delicious, but mainly because every group contains someone who thinks he or she is a professional bartender after two drinks. Shakers fly enthusiastically through the air, recipes are completely ignored and somewhere a cocktail emerges that no one understands why it turned bright green.
Cooking workshops also remain a favorite. Cooking together still sounds very organized and mature beforehand, until it turns out that half of them are mainly occupied with tasting while one person sees himself completely as a star chef. Meanwhile, panic spreads because something burns and no one remembers who was responsible for the oven.
What makes workshops in the Netherlands so much fun is that each city adds its own atmosphere to the day. In Maastricht everything automatically ends burgundy on a terrace, in Rotterdam every workshop suddenly feels hip and metropolitan and in Brabant a simple activity turns into complete conviviality chaos in no time. Historic cities like Utrecht, Leiden and Delft provide atmospheric canals and hidden streets where it's easy to linger afterward. In contrast, in cities like Eindhoven and Tilburg, everything takes on a creative, raw and industrial atmosphere where people spontaneously think they have suddenly become design experts.
And then of course there are the classics: terraces where a "short drink" turns into a complete evening out, group photos where no one is normal and the standard discussion about who really made the worst cocktail or the most failed work of art.
For bachelorette parties, workshops have become almost mandatory by now. Because honestly: nothing brings a group together faster than failing together during a creative task while drinks are on the table. Sooner or later, the bachelor is completely embarrassed anyway, someone gets overly competitive and in the end the whole group is still laughing about it months later. Workshops also work perfectly well for corporate outings. Officially it's all about "team building," but in reality you discover which colleague becomes surprisingly fanatical as soon as a cooking competition ensues or who, after one cocktail, thinks he's auditioning for a television show.
What makes workshops throughout the Netherlands especially fun is that sociability ultimately works the same everywhere. Whether you walk along the canals in Groningen, lock up on the beach in The Hague or linger on a terrace in Breda: the best moments usually arise spontaneously. A workshop is therefore ultimately not just about being creative. It is about laughing together, making memories and witnessing how a simple activity slowly turns into a complete day full of fun, spontaneous plans and stories that grow stronger the more they are told.
